Important information about changes to LastPass Free

We love being a part of the security routines of more than 20 million users across the world. As our LastPass community of users continues to grow, we need to adapt our offerings to keep up with the constantly evolving digital world. We’re making some changes to how Free users’ access LastPass across device types.

LastPass offers access across two device types - computers (including all browsers running on desktops and laptops) or mobile devices (including mobile phones, smart watches, and tablets). Beginning March 16th, 2021, LastPass Free will only include access on unlimited devices of one type.

Free users who would like to continue using LastPass on both desktop and mobile devices, will have the opportunity to upgrade to Premium at the discounted price of $2.25 per month (billed annually). An email with a link to this special upgrade price is being sent to all current LastPass Free customers and another reminder will be sent before March 16th.

What does this mean for LastPass Free users?

As a LastPass Free user, you do not need to take any direct action at this time. However, if you’d like to continue using LastPass on both your desktop and mobile devices, you can upgrade to LastPass Premium or Families.

Starting March 16, 2021, if you do not upgrade to LastPass Premium, the first device you log in on will become your active device type.

If you would like to switch your active device type, you will be able to do so a maximum of three (3) times on or after March 16, 2021. Learn how to switch your active device type.

Is anything else changing for LastPass Free users?

Yes, effective August 23rd, 2021, LastPass Free users will have Basic support, while Premium and Families users will receive Personal support from LastPass.

Basic support includes support center and Community
Personal support includes Basic support options as well as Personal customer support via email

Not to worry, the 25% off promotion will be available until March 16th, so there is plenty of time to take advantage of it, and nothing is changing before March 16th.

I don't know what problem you have with Bitwarden. I switched to it and am very happy. Yes, there are a couple of stylistic features that Last Pass has that Bitwarden doesn't, like the "recently used" and easier access to your folders, but overall it is every bit as good as Last Pass and, in some ways, I think easier to use.

After being a very long term customer of Last Pass, I felt betrayed by their greed. That's what happens today when a good company sells out to another because they got such a good offer. It would be great if corporate america lost it's "greed bone". I'm sick of it.

So, the short of it is that I caved. 😞 I was rather disappointed in other solutions - such as BitWarden - which were not as robust and manageable as LastPass. So, considering how much more hands-on they were, I decided it wasn't worth my time to be perpetually managing the substandard solutions. That said, I find it hard to accept that LastPass is the best one out there, so if I discover another solution that meets my expectations I'll try to remember to update ya'll.

Come to find out that you don't recognize my current email and I have no way to change it over from the obsolete old address which no longer exists without entering, you guessed it, the old email which no longer exists.

I "might upgrade" as I got an offer to do so for 24 for the year.

I know last pass has many members & can get busy but going days without a reply especially IF you have a big problem is a concern especially when you are a paying member who upgraded.

So will see in the coming days last pass has been the go-to password manager for many years I sure hate to leave

A lot of people are going over to Bitwarden, and I'm sure you were aware of that.

I too have been one of those that now use Bitwarden.

I would like to see that you're going to go back to the way it wast there's no incentive for me to upgrade because I don't need any of the extras I'm a customer support is no better than it is with a free member it's actually pretty poor it takes days sometimes a week for LastPass to get back to you.

It's not so much about the $39 it's $3 a month to protect your accounts

Never got any warning whatsoever, until my wife suddely got a message that she appearently had only a few device changes left (WTF?) So after investigating this I found a terrible mistake from Lastpass: sold to LogMeIn! and increasing profits, wanting them to loose their users.

Here's the result:

I have a pro version, the wife/3 kids have free. So instead of eur2.99 I have to pay 5 times 3.99 every month!

Price increase from 2.99 to 19.95

Unacceptable!

Well, I suspect this reply will be removed too, but because of total lack of support and price increase of over 600% (!!!!!!!) I'm out of here. Will be using Bitwarden from now on.

Hi @Biobob I haven't used authenticator but thought I would try to help anyway. It sounds like you are worried about being locked in to using the mobile app only? Is this correct?

If so, maybe the message you are seeing is only warning people? Since you have already chosen desktop app and are locked to that (from previous posts) just ignore the message and try to log in to the LastPass app on mobile and see what happens?

no it tells me that it will lock to a mobile only if I use it again which I dont want, I tried another account just for backing this up but it tells me to login with the first one only that will then lock if I try as there is no way to switch it. Now my authenticator is useless alongside my passwords. I now have to go back to google and Norton instead of one place only. A total pain

@Killer1 As these emails were informing LastPass Free customers of a change they were sent to all LastPass Free customers, including those that opted out of marketing emails. There was also in app messages.

@rjm2 Nah nothing, but there again I do tend to opt out of marketing emails if I ever get the chance so this might be the reason, however it wouldn't be hard for lastpass to use another (from) email account just to ensure all users get such an important update, the last email I received was last april last year when I cancelled my family edition membership as the family wasn't using it.

Just got the pop up when trying to use lastpass on the computer after being on leave last week, didn't get any warning email so a little surprised at being treated like this, how many people do you think just use a single device??

Just gone and enabled the 31 day family trial but says $6 per month rather than the $4 shown on the advert after logging in, I have got my address etc set correctly so would be pretty average of a bit of software not to give me the correct currency conversion if its not going to specify the currency as well as the cost.

Noticed others have been offered a 25% single user upgrade? Was this is the email you never sent me? (I have checked the various spam folders etc)

Hi @Biobob,

I've checked with our development team and the vault restriction in the LastPass app should not block logins, so the LastPass Authenticator backup/restore setting should work even if you've chosen Desktop as your active device type. When opening the LastPass app on your mobile device, are you able to close or ignore the window asking you to switch your device type then go back to the Authenticator app to see if you can then enable the Authenticator cloud backups?

It is a few days since the switch and the exact thing I thought would happen and told wasn't an issue has happened. My LASTPASS authenticator is now not backing up online anymore as there is no account on my phone for the lastpass password manager as I had to choose the pc version from the choices.

Now there is another piece of useful software made useless I now have to replace, I hope your decision to ruin everything was well worth it.

I been using lastpass since 4-5 years ago and I been using lastpass to protect against identity theft and no one else try to steal my datas.

I always have two devices types for PC and Mobile, it's easily to use for password generator rather than I used my password with same words and numbers then could steal my password easily to access the internet like social media, stores and websites.

But this updated is unacceptable, I ask you to revert this update immedinately and lets the freedom internet users to use the password. This is very disgraceful to all LastPass manager, support customer service and staffs.

I can't access on PC but now I have no change left and I still have mobile access. This is something terribly wrong on this updates.

Last Pass has finally placed the last straw on the camel's back. I have been a loyal user for well o$12.00 annual donation. After several years of supporting Last Pass I logged on to renew my membership and found the price had jumped from $12.00 to $24.00. This didn't bother me too much as they had gone for many years with no price increase. I figured it was finally due. The next year when I went to renew the price had jumped to $36.00. At this point I stopped subscribing as I decided Last Pass was getting greedy. Now it's a few years later and they are trying to force their users to subscribe by taking away functionality. As I stated above, this is the last straw. I will be saying good-bye to Last Pass.

There are many other products out there that are just as secure and free along with offering the functionality that we are now losing. Everyone should check out the reviews on CNet and make their own choices. I like the ease of use in Last Pass but I'm not willing to line their pockets with money just because they are so greedy that they are taking away functionality we have had for years to force us to subscribe.

This is typical of the company's business model. they did the same thing with their LogMeIn remote access/support product. get a lot of users and then gradually/suddenly pull back capability until the only real workable functionality was the paid version and then they finally just did away with the free version. Disappointing, but predictable. It was the primary concern I had when we decided to try and use Lastpass for personal use.

I prefer to use LastPass on my PC, on a big screen than a small phone screen to browse the web and don't like to switch between computer and phone, while we have only 3 times chances to switch and don't like to ban or more face with unexpected issues for switching.

It's good the new changes for free users, won't affect the authenticator of LastPass and the backup process of accounts.

Hi @Mas3

The functionality of LastPass Authenticator will not be affected, you can continue using it as you have. If you select desktop as your device type you can leave the mobile app installed and use it to access account settings or for SMS Recovery still, it's only the vault in the mobile app that you will not have access to.

Please note you can change your device type 3 times, so if you find that you only have your phone and you need access to your vault, you can switch to mobile as your device type and then switch back to desktop again later.

I'm a free user and I'm not satisfied with this disappointing news, anyway. Now with these changes, I wonder how to get back up of LastPass Authintactor's accounts in the cloud, while free users set their active LastPass account just only for Computers? Personally, between phone and computer, I'll choose my computer as an active device to use LastPass and manage my accounts than my phone. But how to create a backup of my accounts on LastPass's Authenticator without running LastPass on the phone, because it's no longer on my phone and can't have it on my phone due to the new changes? The authenticator won't let us create a backup without running the LastPass on the phone.

Hi,

If you use the browser on your ChromeBook it's counted as a desktop. If you run the LastPass Android app on the ChromeBook it's counted as a Mobile device. You could use the Android app on your ChromeBook and phone and tablet as they are all considered Mobile.

The limit is to a device type, not a single device.

I don't believe that's correct, My understanding is that you will be able to use it on one type of device only.

So either one or multiple computers or one or multiple mobile devices.

What you are loosing is the ability to sync between say a home pc, home laptop, work pc, and your mobile phone.. I would still be able to sync the first 3 if my login type is PC.. but I wouldn't be able to sync my phone as that's of type mobile.

That said I have now left and am very happy with my new password manager so I haven't looked into any further details however reading the original post it says the same as the email:

What isn't clear is how say a ChromeOS based Laptop would be treated.. It can run the android application.. but its a laptop, so arguably would count as a computer.. but it runs the mobile application. So totally unclear.

My understanding is that with the free version, starting in March, you can use it on ONE device only. You will have to choose which computer, not both. I am very sad and frustrated at this change.

I wouldn't mind paying for this service but you are asking too much money to be able to use a desktop and a phone. The attraction of the app in the first place was being able to use anywhere. Sarah is a Free user with Computers as her active device type. She can use LastPass on her laptop, desktop and her dad’s laptop (anyone’s computer!), but she can’t use LastPass on her phone, tablet, or smart watch unless she upgrades to LastPass Premium, which has unlimited device type access.

Steve is a Free user with Mobile Devices as his active device type. He can use LastPass on his iPhone, Android work phone, tablet, and smart watch, but he can’t use LastPass on his desktop or laptop unless he upgrades to LastPass Premium, which has unlimited device type access.

As a Free user, your first login on or after March 16th will set your active device type. You’ll have three opportunities to switch your active device type to explore what’s right for you. Please note, that all of your devices sync automatically, so you’ll never lose access to anything stored in your vault or be locked out of your account, regardless of whether you use computer or mobile devices to access LastPass.

The worst thing is I got my parents, grandparents, co-workers, etc. to use LastPass on the promise that "there's no reason they would ever force people to pay for this service with so many great competitors" and that they'd "always be able to use a Mobile device and a Desktop that sync". Now I'm going to have to get hundreds of people that I know to switch to Bitwarden rather than put up with a company like LogMeIn, Inc. Just shameful.

I'll try and recommend all of the people I know who make purchasing decisions for their company move from LogMeIn to a competitor that respects them and their users. Great job guys!

LastPass is just one of many money making apps that LogMeIn Inc. runs. I let them know I'm going with a company that actually believes in treating their customers well bitwarden. I agree that we shouldn't expect them to change and I'm sure they think they know what they're doing but I still hope that they realize all of the LogMeIn users that realize they're the same company will leave for the many competitors that offer better services now.

The fact is the LastPass solution did not evolve a lot since the acquisition in 2016 by LogMeIn.

After 5 years, the releases are still on the version 4.xx which mean there were not a lot of evolutions on the product. The product should be largely amortized since then.

Where is the problem now? LogMeIn has been acquired recently by a private equity company which goal is to make more profit. Research & developpement investments have been reduced and the marketing is trying to sell us new concepts without any value added.

Personally, I was customer of Lastpass before the acquisition by LogMeIn, the philosophy was nice and future bright. This is no more the case today. These poor policy to keep a free account is a nonsense, a trap and a kind of manipulation of your supporters. I hope that perhaps you have the sensing executives to roll back your decision. If not, it was a pleasure...

@brendanlynch now you know what the criticism from both paying and free users is all about. It's all about business ethics and integrity, something that LogMeIn's not so rosy history teaches us. I feel for the paying customers who choose to remain with LP, God knows what awaits them going forward.

Please note that $27 should be $27 for an upgrade to your product. It should not become $39 simply because I am from the UK. If you advertise an upgrade offer as $27, it should cost me £19.27 (the current exchange rate) and you'll get your $27. Don't suddenly make the upgrade price £28 as soon as I change my billing information to the UK.

Upgrading to your '$27' offer has just cost me £28.08 which equates to $39.34 - NOT $27.00. Be clear about your pricing. This is just a fundamental rip-off and puts you in a bad light.

Personally I think it's a bad choice, and I have already removed my stuff from LastPass and moved over to Bitwarden.

I just can't accept a price tag that's more expensive than I pay for my VPN service, or a ton of other products I have subscribed to. The constant price increases, and now the 1 type of device change. Your free service is basically something that comes free with every browser already. A password manager is supposed to be used on multiple platforms, otherwise it's just purely redundant.

Glen...I don't really think the price change and move to subscription based service is the primary issue here. It's the approach you've taken. If you want to convert your free users to subscription based users, be honest about it and just say it. The, excuse the term, 'chicken **bleep**' approach you've taken to hold part of the program hostage in an apparent hope that users will simply knuckle under and take the path of least resistance and sign up is what really put me off. It's also what caused me to move to another password manager. And interestingly enough, I'm paying for that service's premium product too. Playing games with your customers is never a winning approach to keeping them. They may not like your honesty or business plan, but the vast majority of them will at least respect you for being honest about it.

Glenn, while I appreciate your reply and your company position, I think you should know something. There's a password manager out there that does the same job as LastPass and actually does some things even better and it costs less than a third of what LastPass is charging. As someone who used to pay for the LastPass Premium offering when it was a reasonable price, I now see I can get better bang for my buck elsewhere. While I get it that LastPass is just trying to make a buck, I believe they have forgotten the fundamental rule of business - make it up in volume. This recent change is nothing more than a money grab. You and I both know that it doesn't cost anymore money to have a user make a web service call to a backend service from their phone (computer) or from their desktop (computer). Really, why don't you just discontinue your free service altogether and then if anyone wants to spend their money with you, they can get all those bells and whistles that you are talking about. Orrrrrrrrr, go elsewhere and get it all for MUCH LESS.

@Telegence You can change your device type 3 times after the March 16 change, Vaults will contimue to sync across both. So if you find yourself in a position to need to switch device types in the future for any reason you will be able to.
