Lastpass Windows Desktop (Vault?)

I DESPISE having to have a browser running every time I need ANY information from Lastpass.

I have THREE Windows 10 PCs, two laptops and a desktop, and the Windows desktop Lastpass vault will NOT install on ANY OF THEM.

Talking to Lastpass has been utterly useless - they tell me to use the "Universal Windows installer". It doesn't put the desktop vault on. Then they tell me to install it from the Microsoft store. That has NEVER WORKED. I always get exactly the same worthless error - 0x80073CF3.

ONE of the three computers has a BRAND NEW, shiny, unsullied version of Windows 10 Pro that I just installed. And installed Lastpass using the Universal Windows installer that puts it in all the browsers and whatever, and if I understand correctly, ALSO installs the Windows desktop version.

DOES NOT WORK.

Does ANYBODY have a sure-fire way to get Lastpass to INSTALL the desktop version? 'Cause one of the biggest reasons we dumped Dashlane was because the got RID OF their desktop version and force everything to go through a browser.

Perhaps a TINY bit of progress...

Followed the instructions. Got the message that it was re-encrypting.

Downloaded the installer. Was FINALLY able to UNCHECK all the browsers. THE ONLY thing checked was the desktop. Installed it.

It required a login. I logged in. And got:

Which I get every time I try to install the desktop version. The password is NOT incorrect. It IS the password with which I log in every time After retrying the installation three times I UNINSTALLED all of Lastpass AGAIN. And started totally from scratch AGAIN.

Installed. Logged in as required. GOT THE SAME ERROR. BTW: This login screen appears to have NO WAY to view your password, to verify that it's correct.

HOWEVER, retrieved the Lastpass password during one of the many logins, and stuck it in an editor – IT IS THE CORRECT PASSWORD.

Shortly AFTER all this, I got a flurry of emails demanding that I verify my location?

It’s NOT new device – it’s had Lastpass on it for over a year. And while the laptop is NOT at home, it IS running from the same portable router on Verizon that is one of the FOUR data streams it ALWAYS runs on.

But, I verified it…………

And started ALL OVER AGAIN.

Opened the installation file. UNCHECKED all the browsers – is there some reason I CAN’T just have it INSTALL EVERYTHING?

Installed the Windows Desktop.

Went through the login AGAIN.

This time I DIDN’T get an error, and it required me to provide the 2FA authentication.

So, IN THEORY, I presume I should have a Lastpass Icon that when selected opens the DESKTOP version?

It DOESN’T. It STILL opens a browser and opens a vault.

Am I NOT understanding how this SHOULD work? SHOULD I get a desktop icon that when selected opens LOCAL vault accessible WITHOUT going through a browser?

And no, the Microsoft store still doesn't do anything and still throws exactly the same error it always does.

Hi @Gracie,

If you're seeing any error messages when trying to install the LastPass For Windows Desktop app this is why the install is not working as expected. I reviewed your account and I see that your password iterations are set to a non-standard number which could cause this issue.

Could you follow these steps to change that number to the standard number and try again?

Log in to LastPass and access your Vault by doing either of the following:

In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon, then select Open My Vault OR Go to https://lastpass.com/?ac=1 and log in with your email address and Master Password. Select Account Settings in the left navigation.
Click Show Advanced Settings.
For the Password Iterations field (under Security), enter 100100 (the standard number by default) Click Update.
When prompted, enter your Master Password and click Confirm. Your Vault data will be re-encrypted, then you will be logged out of LastPass. Log back in to your LastPass account, and then try again.

The FIRST system I tried again, is a desktop running Windows 10 Pro that HAS Lastpass installed. I REMOVED it. I removed the extensions from ALL the browsers. I then downloaded the installer and attempted to deselect a browser. Here’s what I got – and what I get every time I attempt to put the desktop Lastpass on this system.

I SWITCHED to one of the laptops. Also running Windows 10 Pro. Uninstalled Lastpass, removed it from all the browsers, and tried to do the same installation. And got EXACTLY the same error as above.

Finally, I switched to the SECOND laptop – one with a BRAND NEW copy of Windows. No Lastpass (other than the repeated attempts to install it today), no nothing. The ONLY software of significance is Office.

Downloaded the Lastpass Universal Windows Installer again. Deselected all the browsers. Had it install whatever was left. There is a Lastpass icon on the desktop, as there always is, but it’s just a URL. The installation required me to log into my account. On one occasion I received the following error:

Since I was unable to view the password, I presume the error was related to an incorrect password.

Cleared everything, uninstalled and re-installed Lastpass.

Same process, cleared the browsers, did the install, logged in…………..

And NOTHING.

No errors, no desktop Lastpass, no “All Set”. Nothing. Nothing to close.

The ONLY time, again the ONLY TIME, I get a screen with “All Set” for me to close is when I let Lastpass install the browser extensions.

Three completely different systems, two of which throw an exception when I attempt to deselect a browser, and one, completely base, new installation that appears to do NOTHING.

There is NO file, anywhere on the system drive, where Lastpass is installed, that has “lastpass for windows” or any combination of “lastpass” and “windows” in the filename. Nor is there any file in the Lastpass folders on the system with the brand new copy of Windows…

Exactly what is the “Lastpass for Windows Desktop” file called? And where is it stored?

Hi @Gracie,

Could you first make sure all instances of the LastPass for Windows Desktop app are uninstalled from your machine (not the browser extensions, only the windows app) then follow these steps:

Go to https://lastpass.com/download and download the LastPass Universal Windows Installer
Open the downloaded LastPass Universal Windows Installer, click to de-select all of the browser extensions. Make sure "Desktop Application" is the only option Selected. Click Install.
You should see a loading bar/screen, then "All Set!" and you can click Close.
Once you close Close, the LastPass for Windows Desktop app should open.
You should also be able to search your computer for "LastPass for Windows Desktop" to open/set up the app and access your Vault.
