I called a tech support center for a peripheral to my iMAC. LogMeIn Rescue was started. Terminal mode showed some TCP connections were established. He told me my firewall was off and that people were trying to hack into my computer as we spoke. I was told to take my computer to a Certified Cisco Network Analyst...or he could transfer me to a company with these CNNAs that would fix right now. I went with now. Paid $279 for two computers to be looked fixed.
My two computers (iMac and MacBook Air) are behind a Verizon FIOS router.
I watched carefully during the hour long process. I saw two types of cleaning software being attempted to be downloaded, but the new Mavericks OS was too new, and neither of them could be downloaded. Meanwhile, the CPU activity monitor was going and pings were being sent automatically to google.
I waited. And waited.
Then I received a call saying everything was fixed and my viruses were all removed. I asked some questions but was told that he could access my network from his end and I would not see what he had done - the problem was with the network. It was the network. The network. I found it odd that he could do that, especially since I had not typed in the password for the router during the call.
After hanging up, I checked the router log files. No change activity.
The next day I got a call from the company asking if everything was OK. I questioned whether or not they just turned on the firewall and let me watch an activity monitor while a ping was going and didn't really remove any viruses at all. I was assured I had viruses and that they were fixed. I asked where the evidence was that there were viruses? Where are the log files? I was told I had 7 viruses on my iMac and 5 on my MacBook Air plus two trojans. I asked where the viruses were located and was told in the registry. I was told that they could fix my computers without me seeing what they were doing - they used the LogMeIn software while I couldn't see what they were doing. T
I accepted their explanation but said I would look at the LogMeIn website. My screen did not go blank during the repair.
Windows has registry files, but MACs have Preferences. Their explaination provided seems to be wanting.
