Gotomypc from Linux - work without Java

Hi

I really need to connect to my work PC via Linux. However, the Java Universal Runner is not all that great. There is a topic already online dealing with this issue:

I've got exactly the same issue as the guy in the above Topic. I've installed Wine and the User Agent, but when I try to connect I just, eventually, get a timeout. It looks as though it's trying to connect. I'm not sure what to try from here, and any help you can provide would be great.

I'm totally comfortable with Linux and Windows, and I'm a software developer with about 30 years PC experience.

I am new to linux but don't trust win10 at all. I have looked at the posts here and installed firefox in wine using the PlayOnLinux tool in Zoren. This is a new workstation latest I7 (12-12-2016) with 32Gig ram and 1T HDD. The GoToMyPC Opener.exe loads and runs but the install crashes. There is an extensive DownloaderApp.log file created. I would be happy to send this to any one willing to help. I don't think it appropriate to post here as it is quite long. Below are, I think, a few key lines that may help

I've experimented a bit more with this and found I can connect fine if I use XUbuntu, which I also have installed. I'd tried previously with Bohdi, which is an Ubuntu derivative (I'm pretty sure I've tried with plain vanilla Ubuntu as well).

It's not an issue for me using a different version of Linux, I am a bit intrigued as to what on earth causes the issue? It's one of those where something is going to change one day and then nothing works as it did - and you don't know why! Any ideas what may cause it? If not, that's fine, thanks for your help.

I haven't made any changes to Linux at all, it's just as installed. I do have a router which my PC connects through via a wired connection.

I don't have any trouble connecting using Windows, so I guess there is a port getting blocked by Linux which is open in Windows maybe?

Hi Richard,

It sounds like a connection issue, did you make any changes to the firewall (IP Tables), on your Linux distro or is it basically "stock"? Are you behind a router?
