Hi all,
Its probably no news to anyone here that gotoassist is the tool of choice for tech support scammers. I dont hold that against the product, scammers and criminals will use the best tools if they can, so if anything, this shows the product is good.
However, I cant imagine Logmein wants to build its business around this market niche, as it cant be very large and taints its reputation, as the product would easily be associated with scams. Gotoassist may not want to go as for as their competitor by blocking certain countries, but I wonder if they can at least help scambaiters like myself in other ways?
My main concern is about remote file transfer. I totally get that this functionality has legitimate uses, but whenever a scammer transfers files from my PC (which is a virtual machine for obvious reasons), I would like to be notified and/or get an audit trail for this, so I can see who transferred what when. I think this should be enabled by default really, even when used legitimately, doesnt the client have a right to know what files where transfered by who and when? Or does this information already exist somewhere?
Related, does anyone know if file transfer uses distinct TCPIP ports that I can monitor (or throttle)?
Ideally, I would love it if you could release an "antidote" app, something a client or scambaiter could chose to install, and that provides him with some tools, like audit trails, IP of the other party, ability to selectively override permissions etc. There is probably no money in it, but it would show good faith and a proactive stance against scammer abuse, and I dont see how it would hurt legitimate use of the product.
Thanks,
Vertigo
