Hello
I’m a LMI Rescue user and set unattended access on numerous client computers. In the past 3 months I’ve had a persistent problem where some PC’s stops loading the Windows shell on boot-up. Had it on at least ten computers, all of which are running Windows XP Pro SP3. The only way to get the shell up is via Task Manager / explorer.exe.
In some cases it happens once out of every 4 boot-ups, on others it happens every single time. When LMI Rescue Unattended Access is removed, the problem goes away immediately. Some of the systems were also running AVG Antivirus Pro, the rest Trend Corporate OfficeScan. Especially the Trend systems are affected – in at least 50% of bootups the shell will not launch.
Weird thing is, other PC’s running the same combinations are not affected at all. The problem occurs on both domain and peer to peer networks, and has been isolated to XP SP3 systems with either AVG or Trend AV only – Vista & Win7 systems are not affected. In the case of Trend AV systems, Trend doesn’t load even after the shell is forced up. Logging in as a service doesn't help either.
No errors are listed in the system logs either. Please if anyone can advise? It’s a major problem since users don’t want to ctrl/alt/delete to get their shells up (understandably!) and since we run monthly service contracts, cannot burden users with initiating remote logins every time we need to service their systems - normally done after hours.
With thanks
Bert
