LMI Mac and Parental Controls - 'You don't have permission' dialog repeatedly appears

Hello,

I am trying to set up a Mac (10.8) with an account that has parental controls on it. There is a restricted set of applications that this user account is allow to use. LMI is not one of them.

When I log into the account I get the system message 'You don't have permission to use the application 'LogMeIn Menubar'. If offers Always allow, allow once ,OK.

If I click OK it goes away to return again a few seconds later. Indeed, if I do nothing it seems to vanish and automatically re appear every time.

In the admin account on the machine, I disabled Log Me In from the menu bar thinking that when the restricted parental control account is logged in then LMI would not be running. (If I don't disable LMI then we have even more trouble in the Parental Controlled account, during log in).

This makes LMI and Parental Control accounts unusable.

What on earth do I do to stop LMI acting like this?

I have a hack that can bypass this error, and get LogMeIn Remote Access Working. Please understand I am not a MAC or Logmein guru ... so use at own risk.

open terminal:

sudo mv /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn/bin/LogMeInGUI.app /Library/Application\ Support/LogMeIn/bin/LogMeInGUI.app.orig

The Logmein remote access program and the LogMeInGUI program are two different items. The GUI is causing the error, so I just renamed the LogMeInGUI program. This keeps it from being launched by the main Logmein process, and keeps the error and MenuBar icon from appearing. You don't need the GUI to remotely access the computer and use logmein. You can always launch the GUI manually if you need to in the admin account. I used Logmein Installer 4.1.3257 and OSX 10.8.4 - and disabled auto-updates...

It's incredible how terrible some companies are. I would be ashamed of my company if I ran LogMeIn and problems like this persisted year after year. There are so few decent developers in the world.

For a company I pay nearly $1k a year to, this is piss poor, but even more sadly: I'm completely not surprised. I would have been blown away had I come to this thread to find a real solution.

I'm getting this too, under El Capitan 10.11.2.

Three years after the first report. Come on LogMeIn people, stop lying to your customers about "tracking" this and just be honest that you can't or don't care enough to figure it out.

Thanks to GaOpenBSG for that fix... most annoying for my son to keep getting this popup and still no solution... i did raise a defect also a while back. No joy in fixing.

Luckily this worked. Can easily mv it back if needs be.

Misery loves company. I have 5 Pro accounts and purchased ignition as well. Maybe the folks at LogMeIn will help me.

I have the same problem on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro and 2009 MacBook both running OSX 10.8.4. I want to be able to have my own admin account on each, and separate user accounts for the children with limited applications/access through Parental Control. All other limited apps work in the correct way as far as I can tell. LogMeIn doesn't though, and it repeatedly asks for an admin password for LogMeIn or LogMeIn Menubar, even though I select Always Allow, and type in an administrator password.

The issue disappears if I allow all apps to be run (deselect Limit Applications in Parental Controls), and re-appears as soon as I select Limit Aplications (even if LogMeIn and LogMeIn Menubar are ticked as allowed applications), so it appears that LogMeIn is incompatile with the Parental Control even when the application itself is allowed.

While in this mode the laptop is unusable as the permission box repeatedly appears taking control away from other windows.

Please resolve this soon as I will either have to remove LogMeIn or allow access to all applications?

same problem here. I had to uninstall logmein completely from my computer in order to get these to stop. sucks because I actually need to be using it .

I hope this gets fixed.

This is a real pain in the ass, none of my kids can even use the computer, my resolution will be to uninstall unless logmein support can help us out here.

Same problem, Mac 10.7.5. Just started, nothing changed except maybe a Logmein auto update. Happens on a non-admin account.

I assume not however as the first post indicates that they were running 10.8 in the first place. I find it unbelievable that this is only happening to one of the 20 Mac systems which all are running LogMeIn and are all running 10.6.8.

Interesting because the user I fixed the other day also is using 10.6.x and is complaining about it appearing again. I am going to remove the software and try the procedure again, however if this does not work -- I will update the system to 10.8.x (against my better judgment as I still feel SL is a far better operating environment). Ill post my findings.

Thank you for this very detailed procedure. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I'm running 10.6.8 on the target machine, and the User and Groups pane in 10.6.8 is "Accounts" in Snow Leopar. I'm wondering if you know whether my problem might be that the target is running SL? And if so, might moving to 10.8 likely help fix this annoying problem?

Found a bandage fix I think:

Had a client of mine that required LogMeIn to run while restrictions were enabled for their local users (parental controls). Found the following worked:

CREATE TEMPORARY ACCOUNT TO HOLD PARENTAL CONTROLS OF AFFECTED USER(S)

1. Login as an Administrator account

2. Create a standard user account that will be used to remedy this issue such as: FixAccount from within Users & Groups within System Preferences

3. Open Parental Controls from within the System Preferences

4. Select the user account with parental controls applied such as RestrictedUser by clicking on it once

5. Click on the 'gear' icon at the bottom of the parental controls window and click on Copy Settings of RestrictedUser

6. Select the user in the list that you created to remedy the issue such as FixAccount and click on the button Enable Parental Controls for the account

7. Click on the 'gear' icon at the bottom of the parental controls window and click on Paste Settings to FixAccount

REMOVE PARENTAL CONTROL ALLOW LIST ENTRIES FOR LOGMEIN APPLICATIONS

8. Change the allowed list of applications for FixAccount to NOT INCLUDE any LogMeIn applications or anything with the LogMeIn icon such as LMIAgent (you can do this by un-checking all listings of any applications listed as allowed)

9. Click on Show All within the parental controls window to show all system preferences and click on Users & Groups

10. Change the RestrictedUser account into an Administrator temporarily by clicking on Allow user to administer the system checkbox within the Users listing

REMOVE LOGMEIN COMPLETELY AND REPAIR PERMISSIONS

11. Remove LogMeIn completely by clicking on Uninstall from within the LogMeIn application

12. Run a permission repair on the system from within Disk Utility (Click on the spotlight search which is the magnifying glass in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and type Disk Utility) by clicking on the disk (most likely labeled Macintosh HD) and click on Repair Disk Permissions from the First Aid tab

14. Once the repair completes, reinstall LogMeIn

ALLOW AFFECTED USER(S) TO RUN ONCE AS AN ADMINISTRATOR UPON LOGON

15. Logoff the system as the logged in admin and login ONCE as the RestrictedUser which for the moment should be an Administrator

16. Logoff the system as the RestrictedUser and login as the admin again

CHANGE AFFECTED USER(S) BACK INTO STANDARD ACCOUNT(S) AND RE-APPLY PARENTAL CONTOLS

17. Open up Users & Groups from within System Preferences and uncheck the Allow user to administer the system from the RestrictedUser turning the user back into a standard user account

18. Open the Parental Controls setting applet from within System Preferences and copy the settings like you did before but this time from the FixAccount and paste them back to the RestrictedUser after clicking on Enable Parental Controls, doing this will result in a recreation of the parental controls settings file which is what we want

REMOVE TEMPORARY ACCOUNT

19. Delete the FixAccount user account if desired to cleanup after our fixes

ALLOW LOGMEIN EXCEPTIONS W/O 'YOU DONT HAVE PERMISSION..." LOOP

20. Login as the RestrictedUser and you will be prompted to allow LogMeIn Agent to run as well as TWO instances of LogMeIn Menubar; you will want to Always Allow.. them by entering in an administrator username and password and finally...FINALLY the issue will go away

In all my years as an enterprise IT technician I have never seen as many issues as I have personally seen while running LogMeIn, however it still remains my reliable tool for remote accessibility and maintenance. I hope this issue gets resolved in a later version, but LogMeIn...please don't forget about your Mac users, show us a little more love than you have been in the past few years. Thanks!

Same problem here! I have multiple kids accounts and they are all experiencing this. It makes the account almost unusable. It doesn't matter if I give authorization, or click 'OK', or ignore it and move it aside - 10 seconds later it pops up again. This just started happening in the past week.
